Generally a speaker can only go so deep and they can need help

 

Subwoofers are a little misunderstood, being thought of as just a way to add trouser flapping noise to the boot of your 1998 Toyota Yaris

The main role of a subwoofer to us is to extend the frequency response of a speaker to expand the image of the sound - without the full image, there is no way to fully engage with what you are hearing

They make room for body and space in the upper registers and allow the satellite speakers to open up, altogether creating a more immersive experience

A bonus is that they also give physical feeling and drive to the sound, maybe a bit of trouser flapping is OK anyway...
